The wetland is located within Bogota city limits, a protected jewel in one of Latin America's most modern cities. It is the remnants of what was once a vast network of wetlands and lakes, and offers unique birding opportunities within a metropolis. The wetland is gated and is patrolled by private secutiry, making it one of the safest wetlands to bird in Bogota. Open waters harbor large numbers of ruddy duck, American coot, common moorhen and spot-flanked gallinule. The reed beds are home to the endemic Bogota rail and Apolinar's wren.
A trail through riparian forest surrounding the wetland offers excellent opportunities to view the endemic silvery-throated spinetail, Andean siskin and rufous-browed conebill.
