The Otun-Quimbaya Reserve is a flora and fauna sanctuary located one hour from the city of Pereira. Arriving in the early morning is ideal, as we will be received by the sounds of howling monkeys and the endangered, endemic Cauca Guan. They are relatively easy to see here, and were believed to be extinct until a population of the species was rediscovered in 1990. Birding along a dirt road will be productive in finding forest skulkers such as Chestnut Wood Quail (endemic), Chestnut-breasted Wren, Stile’s Tapaculo (recently described endemic), Moustached Antpitta, and Russet-crowned Warbler.
Birders on Otun Quimbaya Reserve
Active mixed foraging groups will produce species such as Plumbeous-crowned Tyrannulet, Rufous-breasted Flycatcher, Inca Jay, Black-billed Peppershrike, Marble-faced and Variegated Bristle-Tyrants, Highland Motmot, Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Golden-fronted Redstart, Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Orange-bellied Euphonia, and Glossy and Masked Flowerpiercer. We wil also search the Otun River in hopes of finding pairs of Torrent Duck. Accommodations at the reserve are superb. The local community has recently taken over the La Suiza lodge, and are doing a superb job of running the place. Supporting the local community is an integral part of ecotourism, so at Colombia Birdwatch we strive to do this.
