Los Flamencos (Flamingos) National Park is located in the Guajira region of Colombia. The park is a sanctuary for a large population of American flamingo, and consists of coastal wetlands, seasonal lagoons, mangroves and dry forest. Flamingo are the main attraction, and although there abundance is seasonal some individuals are present throughout the year. Aquatic habitats within the park are excellent for viewing wading birds, including many migrants and rare vagrants. An early morning rise is a must due to the hot temperatures and lack of shade during the day.
Equally exquisite birding can be had in the nearby dry forest inhabited by the Wayuu people. Here the main stars are the endemic buffy hummingbird and near-endemics such as vermilion cardinal, russet-throated puffbird and black-crested antshrike. An added bonus is birding amongst the locals and seeing first-hand how they live. After a long morning of birding, a restaurant on the beach (yes, you are on sand) offers some of the best seafood in the area.
